RACE FAQ's for Member Boards

RACE was developed and implemented at the request of the AAVSB Member Boards and mimics similar programs in many of the other regulated professions. While not intended to be fully encompassing, the below FAQ's address some of the inquiries of certain segments of the continuing education community.


Program Application Fees

    • A $125.00 Administrative fee is charged to ALL program applications submitted to RACE.
    • A fee of $20.00/CE Unit is charged up to programs up to 49 hours of CE.
    • In addition to the $125.00 Administrative fee, programs 50 hours or more require the following fees:
    • 50 to 99 hours: $500
    • 100 to 249 hours: $1,000
    • 250 hours or more: $2,500

    A late fee of $225.00 will be charged in ADDITION to the other fees stated to program applications received fewer than 45 days in advance of the first course offering. This does NOT expedite the program.

    An additional Administrative fee of $100.00 may be charged for incomplete applications.

  1. The length of time to process an application for AAVSB RACE recognition is too long.
    Applications are generally processed through to a final decision in 3 to 4 weeks. When applications are incomplete and additional information is requested, the process, of course, takes longer. Many of the delays are based upon the applicant's lack of timely response to requests for additional information. Programs which do not meet the RACE Standards will undergo additional review prior to being denied. This additional review process will lengthen the process from 3-4 weeks to 6-8 weeks or longer, depending on the timeliness of the response to requests for additional information from the provider.

  2. Some programs that have been RACE recognized in the past are now being denied approval, and visa versa. How can this happen?
    AAVSB RACE recognition is based upon applicants meeting the current RACE Standards. Effective in August 2015 and based upon input from Member Boards, RACE Standards were modified to reflect the needs of the AAVSB membership. Those programs approved prior to the Standards change will remain approved and active until they are submitted for renewal. The renewal process allows RACE to evaluate the programs according to the most current RACE Standards, in order to ensure the highest quality of continuing education.

  3. Can programs involving coursework or information not taught in veterinary school be approved?
    According to the RACE Standards, in order to be deemed eligible for approval by RACE, CE offerings must be designed to reflect the educational needs of the veterinarian or veterinary technician and build upon or refresh the participant in the standards for practice and the foundational, evidence-based material presented in accredited colleges or schools of veterinary medicine or accredited veterinary technician programs. Programs falling outside of this scope cannot be approved, or that fall into one of the criteria listed in Article IV. Programs That Are Not Acceptable for RACE Approval will not be approved.

  4. What information about RACE applicants is provided to relevant veterinary licensing boards?
    The final decision of RACE recognition or denial is made available to the AAVSB Member Boards. Upon request of a Member Board, additional, more specific information regarding the application will be provided. Program and provider application information is confidential and is not shared with entities outside of AAVSB membership.

  5. Who makes the decisions of whether applicants meet the AAVSB RACE Standards?
    The RACE Committee consists of 10 voting members. RACE recommendations are further vetted by the AAVSB Board of Directors which has the ultimate decision-making authority regarding RACE applicants. Of course, all such decisions are based upon an analysis of the information submitted by the applicant as it relates to the RACE Standards.

    AAVSB contracts with multiple consultants with expertise in various aspects of veterinary practice, including complementary and alternative practice. Consultants are not involved in any decision-making capacity with the RACE program.

  6. What are the qualifications of the AAVSB RACE decision-makers?
    RACE committee members and consultants are appointed by the AAVSB Board of Directors with consideration to the need of diverse representation, expertise and continuity. The majority of voting members are required to be current or former members of their state veterinary boards. All members must be veterinarians in good standing.

  7. What rights do RACE applicants have who are dissatisfied with the AAVSB decision?
    RACE applicants have the right to appeal adverse decisions through the AAVSB RACE Appellate procedure. The AAVSB RACE Appellate Commission has the authority to affirm, remand, or reverse a previous Board of Directors determination. The RACE Appellate Commission is an entirely separate entity from the RACE Committee.

  8. What is the definition of RACE-Approved Continuing Education?

    From Article I. General Information in the 2015 RACE Standards

    RACE is a program of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), established as a clearing house for the review and approval of continuing education providers and their programs.

    RACE's objective is to approve continuing education (CE) that consists of educational activities that serve to maintain, develop or increase the knowledge, skills and professional performance and relationships that veterinary medical professionals (including veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists) use to provide services for patients, the public or the profession.

    CE content considered by RACE should build upon or refresh the participant in the foundational material presented in accredited colleges or schools of veterinary medicine and includes the following:

    • That body of knowledge and skills recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic veterinary sciences,
    • The discipline of veterinary medicine, and
    • The provision of veterinary care to the public.


    RACE reviews programs and providers and approves them based on meeting the requirements of the RACE Standards as to subject matter and speaker qualifications. RACE does not "accredit" or "endorse" a program nor does RACE approval validate the content of the program.

    RACE is a tool to be used by:

    • Veterinary Licensing/Registering Bodies to support their requirements for veterinary professionals to obtain continuing education prior to re-licensure/re-registration.
    • Veterinary Medical Professionals (veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists) to obtain continuing education that can enhance their competency and ability.
    • Continuing Education Providers to legitimize and differentiate their educational offerings.


    RACE review considers both the quality and quantity of CE.

    • Quality assessment includes both the appropriateness of the subject matter in achieving the RACE objective as well as the qualification of the presenter as a subject matter expert on the topic being considered.
    • Quantity of CE is a determination of the number of CE Credits available for the program calculated on specific formulas unique to each delivery method.
