NAVLE through California

The CA Veterinary Medical Board has agreed that AAVSB will be its designated agent and that AAVSB will “evaluate the qualifications of candidates who apply to take the NAVLE and will determine the eligibility of each candidate to do so.” AAVSB’s responsibilities are limited to eligibility determinations related to the NAVLE, and AAVSB will only act as agent when the CA Veterinary Medical Board has entered into a contract with the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME), whereby the NBVME will provide qualified candidates with access to the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and that AAVSB is recognized as an agent.

The CA Veterinary Medical Board determines licensure eligibility based upon statutory criteria. AAVSB has undertaken and is assessing candidate qualifications for eligibility to sit for the NAVLE. AAVSB determines qualifications of candidate eligibility by assessing that candidates have either graduated from an accredited school or are within 8 months of graduation. AAVSB will either verify such candidate is in good standing within the school and within 8 months of graduation, or alternatively, in receipt of a certified set of transcripts indicating graduation from an accredited school. With regard to foreign educated/trained candidates, AAVSB will ensure successful completion of the Qualifying Science Examination (QSE) of the AAVSB Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) or has completed and is in receipt of a certificate from the American Veterinary Medical Association Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) program.

This is for applicants who would like to register for the NAVLE through California.

NOTE: Current ECFVG candidates may NOT apply for NAVLE eligibility through California. Applicants who hold a certificate of completion from ECFVG are eligible.
