PAVE and the NAVLE

The NAVLE is a requirement for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in all licensing jurisdictions in North America. The NAVLE consists of 360 clinically relevant multiple choice questions.

The NAVLE is offered throughout North America and at certain overseas sites at computer testing centers operated by Prometric. The NAVLE is available during a four week testing window in November-December, and a two week window in April. The application deadline for the Nov-Dec window is August 1. The application deadline for the April window is January 3.

The NAVLE is owned and delivered by the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME). For specific examination-related questions, i.e. scoring, content, etc., please visit the NBVME website.

Eligibility Requirements for PAVE Candidates

In order to be eligible for the NAVLE, the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME) requires that PAVE candidates have passed Step 3: The Qualifying Science Examination (QSE). All NAVLE applicants must be within 6 months of graduation at the time of the testing window (unless different in your state).

The state through which you are registering for the NAVLE will require verification that you have passed the Qualifying Science Examination, a Letter of PAVE Eligibility. To request a PAVE Letter of Eligibility for the NAVLE, please email Put "Letter of Eligibility Request" in the subject line. Your request must include your name, the state through which you are applying, your anticipated graduation date, and the state's deadline for receiving the information.

Please allow approximately 1-2 weeks for your request to be processed. You will receive email confirmation once your request has been processed. You are encouraged to follow up with your state to ensure that they received your letter.

PLEASE NOTE: PAVE candidates applying for the NAVLE through California do not need to request a Letter of Eligibility. For further information on applying for the NAVLE through California, please click here.

How to Apply for the NAVLE

All NAVLE candidates must submit TWO applications and be approved by a licensing entity to take the examination. Detailed information about the NAVLE application process is available on the NBVME website:

Candidate Information Bulletin

The NAVLE Bulletin of Information for Candidates is available on this website in PDF version. It is available electronically on the NBVME website, or you may request a hard copy by contacting the NBVME.

NAVLE Score Transfers

The state through which you registered for the NAVLE will receive your scores from the NBVME, so there is no need to request a score transfer. But if you are applying for a license in a state(s) other than the one you took the NAVLE through, you will be required to do a VIVA score transfer. For further information on how to request a score transfer, please click here.

PAVE candidates do not need to have their NAVLE scores transferred to AAVSB.
